hc and our environment
The Directors at hc solicitors LLP take their responsibility for the environment very seriously and actively encourage all their staff and suppliers to limit their use of the world’s natural resources. They recognise that environmental issues form an integral part of their business.
As an office-based company, the main environmental issues which concern us relate to the use and recycling of office consumables, (especially paper and stationery), the use of energy and water and the reduction of waste.
We have already taken decisions within the office which have had a positive impact both on the environment and on the firm’s efficiency. These include the following:
- Installing a modern and efficient heating system
- Employing specialist contractors to advise on environmental issues when extending our offices. Our air conditioning complies with the KYOTO agreement, we have energy efficient movement sensor lights, efficient water heaters, together with a zoned heating system to minimise wasted energy
- All offices and open plan areas have recycling bins and staff are encouraged to recycle everything they can and keep the non-recyclable general waste to a minimum
- As a legal practice we have a considerable amount of confidential waste. All of this is stored separately, shredded on site and then taken away to be recycled
- All paper used in our printers and photocopiers is recycled paper where possible
- Where possible our company literature is printed on FSC-certified paper, this means that paper is made from wood from replanted forests
- We re-use all ring-binders and plastic folders rather than filing them with archived files as other firms do
- We recycle old office equipment. Furniture is renovated where possible and items such as computers and printer cartridges are collected and given to charities or schools
- Cans and bottles are collected and recycled
- Staff are encouraged to email internal documents and only print where necessary - and if so – double sided
- We provide parking spaces for bicycles and encourage staff to car share for their journey to work and travel during the working day
We are committed to seeking further improvements to increase efficiency in use of energy and water. We have also set targets to save paper and other office consumables and will continue to involve our staff and suppliers in our efforts.
