Hunt & Coombs Solicitors: the first law firm to be awarded Investors in Environment Green standard

Hunt & Coombs Solicitors are delighted to announce that their Peterborough Head Office has been awarded the Investors in Environment Green Accreditation. Managing Director, Lynne Ayres said “We are particularly proud to be the first law firm in the country to achieve this. Over many years the Directors have recognised the impact their business has on the environment and we have taken decisions to minimise this, whilst also improving the firm’s efficiency. Changes to our website and brochures have reflected the firm’s commitment to protecting our environment and encouraging others to do the same.

All staff have been encouraged to take part, leading to a continued improvement of the firm’s environmental performance over recent years in relation to our services and operations. Reminders to turn off lights, compost tea bags and apple cores, recycle sandwich packaging and get involved in the latest competition for growing the best vegetables have all helped get staff involved! Many staff now car share with colleagues or family with several walking to work and cycling when they can. Those with children are passing on their enthusiasm; the daughter of one of our staff is on her school Eco Committee and many get involved with gardening and tending their allotments.

We collect weekly data for our use of water, gas and electricity, setting targets for the month. We are also measuring our use of paper, recycling of confidential and general waste and our costs of travelling to training courses. In all areas we have made significant savings. We took part in “Zero Waste Week” and managed to achieve a 70% reduction in our waste to landfill, whilst also starting our ongoing composting process.

The whole process has been a very positive one for the firm. We have had support and encouragement from the Peterborough Environment City Trust who run the Investors in Environment scheme. We now have a travel plan and detailed action plans in place to help us work towards our future targets including a further reduction in our carbon footprint."
